Community Spotlight: Old World Armies, Spiders & Aliens + Doctor Who!
March 11, 2026 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Old World Armies by horus500
We start out with a new project for a new year from horus500 who has started powering through even more miniatures from their collection. The first thing that caught my eye was the addition of some great-looking Slayers for use with The Old World. Proper classic metal Dwarves from the olden days.
horus500 knows someone at their club who wants to jump back into the game and so Dwarve Slayers were dragged out of retirement to do battle once more. I absolutely love these classic Slayers, especially with their astronomically big beards. All of the miniatures were stripped, rebased and repainted and they look brilliant. The orange, in particular, looks great.
As well as the Slayers, horus500 has also been tinkering with a Chaos army that needs some new heroes. This builds on the Chaos army from last year, using some Warhammer Age of Sigmar miniatures for The Old World. They work really well.
I really liked the work on the Nurgle champions above, drawing on some of the great figures from the Warhammer Underworlds collection. As well as newer miniatures, some older figures also made it into the mix, including that Nurgle fellow being carried into battle on a stinking palanquin.
You also have the gibbering Great Spined Beast/Chaos Spawn that has lumbered and cavorted into the midst of battle. I think all of these miniatures look great and horus500 continues to do inspiring paint jobs that remind me that I could still dive back into The Old World and start up that Dwarf army I have in a box.
Spiders & Aliens by dags
Moving on from Warhammer but to another Games Workshop game, we have a look at dags who has been working on some new miniatures for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game. I really like the work that they have done on Shelob!
This is a lovely new plastic set from Games Workshop and it has been painted up really nicely by dags. I think Shelob has come together really well and I like that all of the patterning and scars have been painted on to match the creature from the movie. Gollum also looks great!
The basing also works very nicely for the miniatures and it really showcases the dark and dank spots of Middle-earth where these characters would dwell. Gollum looks particularly great and the webbed up Hobbits also look fantastic. A really great set of miniatures for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game.
As well as working their way through some Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game, dags has also been painting up Zeratul, which was the awesome, special miniature that Archon Studio released for their upcoming StarCraft wargame.
Zeratul here looks awesome and I think that dags has done a stunning job on realising this video game character. I really like all of the gold details that dags has brought to life and especially the really good gem work that you see there, drawing the eye to key points of the miniature. A great showing for an iconic character.
Doctor Who by jeffersonpowers
Last but not least, we're exploring a bit of Pulp Sci-Fi awesomeness from jeffersonpowers who has been exploring a bit of Doctor Who on the tabletop! They have been plugging the gaps in their collection, based on the Harlequin/Black Tree Doctor Who range. Some classic miniatures meet some newer ones plus loads of story and some great battle report goodness too!
jeffersonpowers has built up a crop of miniatures with some newer miniatures from Crooked Dice for example. They have some great work painting these up and really nailing the nature of the characters and how they would have looked in the TV show.
I love seeing these and how they match up quite nicely with the screenshots that jeffersonpowers has included as part of the project. In addition to painting up loads of cool characters, jeffersonpowers has also been working on playing some games using these miniatures as well, which is great.
In the most recent of the games that was being played, jeffersonpowers jumped into Perilous Tales using these Doctor Who miniatures. The game is very simple and cooperative, so the players join up against a set of villains and minions. It is well worth checking out the project in more detail and following along with the adventure! Make sure to dive in if your a Doctor Who fan.
