Community Spotlight: Thunderbirds Are Go, 20mm World War II & Speedy Death Korps
March 4, 2026 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Tracy Island by gorram
We start off this week with an incredibly nostalgic terrain project. If you are old enough, then you'll remember Blue Peter and the awesome build of Tracy Island that they did way back in the day. I was very lucky enough to get a Tracy Island for Christmas from my parents but Blue Peter went to the trouble of creating a tutorial for folks to build their own and it was awesome.
With that in mind, gorram from the community has taken on the challenge of building their own take on Tracy Island, using that old tutorial as a starting point. That means plenty of recycled elements, a lot of tin foil and plenty of cardboard and sticky back plastic. Everyone loves sticky back plastic. The project is now complete and gorram has done an absolutely amazing job on covering the development of this terrain project, showcasing the build, the pitfalls and the painting of it all.
The island is looking suitably awesome and seriously impressive. Every time that I've checked this project, I've seen it coming together really nicely. It was awesome to see that gorram also sourced some of the original toys from the period alongside 10mm miniatures from Pendraken to use as representatives of the Thunderbirds team and beyond. I am getting those warm, fuzzy feelings inside, which is what you want from the hobby.
Once the water has been added, the terrain project really comes together. It looks brilliant and with the addition of the more updated techniques that have come from years of hobby, it feels a bit "cooler" than the original project from Blue Peter back in the day (as cool as that was!). What's more awesome is that gorram has started the painting of the characters and they can be seen on the project running around the island having fun, getting ready to respond to the next emergency.
World War II 20mm by piers
Moving on, we're creeping up in scale and heading to 20mm with more from piers for their never-ending World War II project. Most recently, they painted up some more Soviet troops from AB Figures.
This is an upcoming set of miniatures, the Red Army Infantry in Greatcoats, which are due for release soon. They look awesome and I am always overjoyed to see piers' painting. piers has, as you might expect, a real talent for painting in this scale and bringing out all of the right details in the miniatures that they paint. I am particularly taken by how the faces always look on these miniatures.
The look is complete when you start to see all of the miniatures together on the tabletop. They look great and come packed with character. I have also learned a lot more about painting guns from looking at piers' work. Going with a dark metallic (almost black) works very nicely and feels more fitting for the period than sparkling silver. More realistic and, importantly, easy to paint.
As a bonus, piers also painted up some Germans recently, which looked great too.
This is another AB Figures set that can be used for your fights in Battlegroup Italy. It represents a German Mule Supply Train featuring mules from the AB Figures Burma British set and handlers from a couple of different packs. One of the mules has also been converted to carry German equipment.
Speedy Death Korps of Krieg by zoidpinhead
Last but not least, we have a project that might be perfect for John who is also working on Death Korps of Krieg right now. zoidpinhead has been working on a speedy way to paint up their own Warhammer 40,000 miniatures for the tabletop.
zoidpinhead breaks down the process of painting these miniatures over on their project but it essentially boils down to working with various Speed Paints in order to get a quick and effective scheme done without a lot of hassle. A full list of the paints and the process is available for you to poke your nose into if you're intrigued by this.
I think it looks great. It's dark and brooding, working very well to get across that grimdark feel of the force on the tabletop. I like that there are still plenty of noticeable focal points here and there, like the lens and their kit, which draws the eyes to the more detailed parts of the miniatures. The grimdark basing also helps sell the scheme.
When you see this under a different light and with one of the characters in the mix, this look works very well.
A sterling set of miniatures, building off of some of the things that zoidpinhead has learned from the world on their Bauhaus project for Warzone. I am very impressed to see where this project goes and how quickly the Combat Patrol comes together.
