John and Justin look at the DeHavilland Mosquito Squadron for Blood Red Skies from Warlord Games.

This set comes with a swarm of six mozzies, the special advantage denoting bases and all the marking sheets, cards and tokens to take these twin-engine bombers to the tabletop.

I compeltely agree with John on this but I’d go one further than him and say is was the best aircraft of the time. The versatility of the mosquito meant that it could pretty much fill any role required of it. Of course I’m all about the recce side but thats going to translate very well into this game. If I’m honest I’ve avoided Blood red skys till I saw these a while back, definitely something I’m going to pick up soon!

The RAF did wonders in WW2 to not be crushed by the Luftwaffe. Good planes, but pilots defending their homeland, family and friends from the enemy is a great motivator.

I still haven’t played Blood Red Skies, but my starter box is painted. To add some variety I need to add twin engines to both sides. Mosquito will be the British… might pick them up at UK Games Expo.

One interesting thing about twin-engine fighter aircraft is due to their guns being mounted on the fuselage. With aircraft that had wing-mounted guns, they had to aim the guns so their fire would all be aimed at a point in space in front of the plane, typically about twenty yards or so. A twin-engine aircraft’s guns were mounted to fire straight forward, meaning they were able to engage at larger range. It’s one of the things that made twin-engine aircraft like the Mosquito and Lightning devastating opponents.

Hard to say… lot of WW2 games out there… even more if you include alternate history games.

Would help if you could narrow down your interest to land, sea, or air and specify if you’re looking for historical and alternate history.

I’m not the best to advise on this… but I’m sure some ‘beasts’ are…

A lovely looking and highly versatile aircraft. I am completely a Luftwaffe man myself but even i have to admit the Mosquito was a cutting edge development in aeronautical engineering.

The other benefit of the wooden construction is that Britain had a lot of quality furniture makers who simply stopped making tables and switched to Mosquitos

Don’t forget that the American P-51 Mustang became a top tier fighter after switching from Allison to Merlin engines.

I’m with you John, i share your love of this plane!
I did not know about the late war version having an anti-tank gun in it though!

Always had a soft spot for the humble Mozzie. No doubt in part to multiple viewings of 633 Squadron when I was younger, but like John was saying some of the stories about the missions they got sent on are nuts- that one he mentions about the prison? If I remember right it wasn’t just the fact it took out the wall by going in over the tree tops at high speed. The mosquito was also used as a transport plane in a couple of occasions, a seat was rigged in the bomb bay along with an oxygen bottle, the agent would climb in and be transported home, hoping the gas battle worked

One of my favourite aircraft and probably one of the most underrated aircraft of the war. I don’t think its full potential was ever really realised which is why it was initially relegated to reconnaissance. When you look at today’s bombers, I guess it was ahead of its time.
