8mm Dark Angels by avien

We start off this week's Community Spotlight with a look at avien's project, where they are painting their way through an army of tiny Space Marines. Rather than go for 28mm, they have gone all the way down to 8mm with the army and it's looking great.

8mm Dark Angels #1 by avien

When it comes to this project, avien has powered up the 3D printer and started working on bringing the Dark Angels to the tabletop en masse with loads of cool characters, troops, vehicles and more. This project was born out of a love of the Dark Angels from "back in the day" and the desire to try a new challenge. What's great about this project is that avien hasn't just been charting the progress of painting these miniatures but also showcasing the process of printing them and the lessons learned from doing so.

What's cool about the project is that avien has also been talking about establishing a painting process for painting so many different Space Marines and all of the vehicles, walkers and more!

8mm Dark Angels #3 by avien

It's no easy thing to tackle this many miniatures, even if they are all in 8mm scale. So, working out the process is key and it has been neat reading avien's progress as they work out the direction they want to go with this 8mm force. Another element to this has been working out when to stop and avoiding over-detailing the miniatures in the painting process!

8mm Dark Angels #2 by avien

I really like following the process from avien and how all of the different aspects of this project have come together to produce a fun, alternative look at Warhammer 40,000. I like that avien wanted to venture back into the grimdark future but didn't want to go down the traditional Games Workshop route. Instead, they embraced a different scale and a new painting challenge.

Space Orc Rokkers by PIGM00

Next up, we're sticking with the grimdark future but with an Orcish twist. Here, PIGM00 is celebrating Orktober with an excellent showcase of Rokkerboys who have gone on tour, bringing their Waaagh! to all corners of the galaxy.

Ork Rokkers #1 by PIGM00

Whilst you might think that these miniatures are going to be used in Warhammer 40,000, these Orcs actually end up being used in the likes of Stargrave, Space Station Zero and Space Gitz. Essentially, PIGM00 likes having fun with Orcs and so picks up whatever miniatures take their fancy. You'll notice that if you go and explore their project.

One of the most recent additions to the collection was the amazing set of the Guns N' Fungus band and the Kromlech stage that will make one hell of a setting for a clash on the tabletop. The band looks great, the stage looks awesome and I always appreciate seeing this funnier side of the classic Games Workshop brought to life.

PIGM00 also went to the effort of working through some upgrades for this stage so that Guns N' Fungus would have a better time on tour. Some additional kegs were added into the mix, cups for them to drink from, six packs of (probably) grog and some Modulorka stagehands for good measure. There are even nods to The Young Ones and the one leading the show is Lord Humongous.

Ork Rokkers #3 by PIGM00

I think this is an excellent celebration of Greenskin goodness for the month of Orktober and I like projects like this where folks just get to have fun. Hopefully, this will end up being part of a fun scenario on the tabletop at some point, as well as just being a nice display piece to show off some old-school rockers.

Halo: Flashpoint by bobcockayne

Last but not least, we have some more work by bobcockayne, who has been getting all fired up for a bit of Halo: Flashpoint. They have been painting away on some of the miniatures from Mantic Games and getting them ready for some games. I was particularly taken by bobcockayne's work on the Elites!

Halo Flashpoint #2 by bobcockayne

I think the simple but effective paint schemes for the Elites are excellent and show what you can do if you just get stuck in. They remind me SO MUCH of the original Halo game and the Elites that you would have faced when you were battling as Master Chief back in the day. I also like the way that bobcockayne attempted painting the energy sword for the Elites, going with white and then working in the blue of the blade rather than going the other way round!

Halo Flashpoint #1 by bobcockayne

The same effect has been used on Master Chief, as you can see above. Again, I was really taken by the work that bobcockayne has done here, especially when working on the under armour for Master Chief and picking out some of the white details like his designation and the stripes on his armour. Small elements that some folks could easily miss.

bobcockayne has also done some extra work on the Spartans from Halo: Flashpoint as well. Rather than just do Red and Blue team, bobcockayne has added more detail into the schemes and given them a more modern look that matches the more recent video games in the series.

Halo Flashpoint #3 by bobcockayne

There is much more of bobcockayne's work for you to check out as part of the Project linked above. Get a look at what they have been up to and maybe get some inspiration for painting your own miniatures from Halo: Flashpoint. This might inspire me to actually get my ass in gear and paint my own Master Chief who is currently still in the box.
