Community Spotlight: Medieval French, Stunning Skaven & Musketeers!
October 22, 2025 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Hundred Years' War French by piers
We start off this week's Community Spotlight by having a look at piers' work on their ever-growing Medieval army for The Hundred Years' War. Some ace characters have been painted up to slot into the army alongside some great Geonese Crossbowmen.
piers always does an excellent job with their Historical miniatures (and miniatures in general!). I love pier's painting style, which always makes the miniatures pop, embracing a classic style which is always colourful and interesting.
As it stands, some new Genoese Crossbowmen have been folded into the mix, which are based on those that were at Crecy without large Pavise shields. Apparently, those shields were lost somewhere in the French baggage train, which seems quite the oversight.
This is a glorious-looking army of Medieval troops with plenty of colour on display and some fluttering banners. In addition to doing the rest of the French, piers has also worked on a set of English Longbowmen. If you'd like to get your hands on these miniatures now, head over to Gripping Beast, as these are from the Front Rank range.
Skaven by Scarhandpainting
Next up, we're checking out some more of the work by scarhandpainting for the world of Warhammer Age of Sigmar. This is another commission project where scarhandpainting had to turn their attention to painting up a scheming army of Skaven.
I like that this selection of Skaven have been painted up to get across that gritty, grimy vibe. This comes across in all the worn and beaten-up army, as well as that extra level of verdigris worked into the weapons and armour. It works really well to focus attention on specific areas of the miniatures, especially when twinned with the glow effects.
It's a relatively simple (in broad terms) scheme which looks incredibly effective. It reminds me more of the style of Skaven that you'd expect from Warhammer Fantasy Battles rather than Warhammer Age of Sigmar, which I like. I don't mind the poppy, wild colours of The Mortal Realms but the Old World ticks a lot of boxes.
The army looks great when you see it presented as one, especially with all of the glowing Warpstone/Wyrdstone. It's a great way of nailing a distinct and evocative army with an eye-catching hook rather than getting bogged down in all of the little details. An impressive array of Skaven that should be inspiring for folks.
Musketeers by onlyonepinman
Next up, we're having a look at what onlyonepinman has been doing as they expand their collection of miniatures for Anno Domini: 1666. In this case, we got some famous faces popping up for a bit of 17th Century swashbuckling in the form of the Musketeers!
Notable characters like the dashing D'Artagnan have been painted up for this faction with Anno Domini: 1666. onlyonepinman has done an excellent job of painting up more of these miniatures for the game and the range, especially with all of the poppy colours. You can see it here with D'Artagnan but you can see more over on the project, looking at the other Musketeers.
This also marked the first faction complete. Here, you can see the main characters in he middle alongside two detachments of Musketeers who will be fighting alongside them. It's a small thing but I also really like the light, cobbled bases with a touch of moss in between the stones. It works so well to frame the miniatures.
With one faction done, onlyonepinman has now moved on to working on the Polish-Lithuanian Defenders of the Crown. These miniatures are a nice change of pace, which is neat, changing up the colour choices for a more earthy approach. It's neat reading onlyonepinman's Project as they go in-depth on the background of these different characters and troops. For example, it was neat hearing about the fictional work these came from, based on the works of Henryk Sienkiewicz.
