September 3, 2025 by avernos
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Bretonnian Mordheim Warband by MiniatureBrushworks
Kicking things off this week, MiniatureBrushworks has broken out his Baron's War minis from Footsore, finally with a view to getting them on the table. In the absence of getting a game of the Baron's War, he's decided to use them as proxies for a Bretonnian warband in Mordheim.
The warband looks amazing, the base work gives it a realistically grounded feel, so they won't look out of place on any historical tabletop, and the sprinkling of leaves gives a nice pop of colour and feature to the basing, tying them all together. The use of Red as a spot colour throughout the miniatures also gives a cohesive look without uniformity creeping in.
We often talk about the use of colour on historic miniatures, and that not everything needs to be drab and shades of dark leather. Here we see MiniatureBrushworks has done exactly that, the nobility are practically a riot of colour, including the royal colour identifying the leader of the warband subtly, add to this the terrific highlighting on the red helms and you have a distinctive noble to lead your band.
But we shouldn't just focus on the nobility, the men-at-arms as well have had some amazing work done, the free-handed plaid painted onto the cloaks in particular is eye-catching. Even though the peasantry in the main are in duller colours, there is still a throughline of hues giving them a look of retainers for their masters. All we are missing now is the battle report of the campaign 😉
Pilfering Lloyds Work by Seldon9
Seldon9 is our next inductee into the buttery dingding hall of fame and he's done so by coming up with an original idea that Lloyd will probably copy and claim for himself like foam hills!! This is his plan to resurrect the attack on Endor using x-wing.
What I really love about this project is that seldon9 has taken the concept and then recreated it into a version that is scaled down and transportable while still maintaining all of the intricacies of the game itself, swapping out a million trees for neoprene mats makes it not only easily moved to different venues but also easy to store and easy to play with!
Seldon9 has used a variety of 3D printing to build the targets for the attack, as well as the ground forces to protect the vital objectives from the aggressors in the rebel alliance! the extra work in doing this along with the basing for the ground vehicles matching the mat, really helps sell it as a complete game, which is key for showcasing it to other people.
The playtesting is a great example of what you need to do before you go public with a participation game. I know from experience that what seems like a good idea may not translate to a fun scenario to be part of, and what you don't want people to do is to join a game and leave feeling like they've wasted their time. Little tweaks and willing clubmates and friends are key to presenting an excellent game at a venue to coax new people into the hobby or even your club long term!
The Year Of 2025 by ironshield
This mammoth project is an absolute belter from Ironshield as the year of 2025 shall be known as the year of getting sh*t done! There's already some amazing stuff in the project that you should check out but I've decided to focus on the most recent entry for his solo fantasy project for Chronicles of Blood.
There's something delightfully fulfilling in seeing a force come together, and one of the things I like about the Chaos force Ironshield has put together is that it has a very clean neutral look to the armour and equipment. It's rare to see such relatively bright steel on them that they make a visually striking force while still having that chaotic menace.
This is carried over into the marauders the blood splatter is the only thing over the top about them but otherwise it's a good clean and bright paint job that well make them stand out on the table which is something of a rariety, but it also helps move them away from the concept of what a Chaos warrior is into more of a barbarian feel for his fantasy game.
A great idea when it comes to using your miniatures in your collection for something different.
