MkII Assault Squads Crash Into Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
July 23, 2025 by brennon
Games Workshop dropped a whole bunch of previews and more for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. One such preview covered the new Assault Squad clad in MkII Crusade Armour.
MkII Assault Squad // Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
This set contains ten multi-part plastic miniatures which wear the iconic Crusade Armour of The Horus Heresy. These miniatures can be armed with chainaxes, bolt pistols, combat shields as well as power mauls, heavy chainaxes, volkite serpenta, disintegrator pistols and melta bombs. You've also got loads of accessories like grenades, holsters and pouches.

Rules for these Assault Squads will be found within the new Liber Astartes and Liber Hereticus books, so you can introduce these Space Marines into the mix for both the Loyalists and the Heretics.
New Warhammer: The Horus Heresy Supplement
In addition to the MkII Assault Squad, you can also get your hands on a new Journal Tactica, which expands your options for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy.
Journal Tactica: The Forges of Saturn // Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
This set comes with plenty of new lore that covers The Saturnine Renewal, and the War of Bitter Iron between the Word Bearers and the Iron Hands. You'll also find more about the Kolarne-Distal incident, which involves the White Scars and the Thousand Sons.
You will also find three asymmetrical Onslaught Missions, two new Legiones Astartes Detachments, new profiles for Saturnine Command Squad, a Centurion in Saturnine Armour and more. You'll also find Arcana Upgrades for the Thousand Sons when clad in Saturnine Armour.
These new releases will be coming out in the near future for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy, so watch this space...

Now that’s what I call Jump Jet Engines 8)
Wonder if GW are going to release models for the new profiles or are they encouraging people to kitbash them…?
They probably will release a ton of new models. They don’t like people kit bashing anymore, when they can sell them a pre-planned kit. Even the models are harder to bash than in the old days.
Such a bummer, too. Kitbashing is my favorite part of the hobby, and I love the MK II and MK III armor. Le sigh. I guess there’s always 3D printing, but resin isn’t as good to work with as plastic.
they either release models, remove the stats or just plain ol make them useless … take yer pick.
I wouldn’t trust GW to do anything positive unless there’s money in it for them.
I suspect from looking at a few things that this latest edition is selling extremely poorly. My local game store had 85 copies up for preorder and is currently showing as having 78 still available and this is a very popular wargaming shop. I know it’s tempting to be dramatic when it comes to GW but in this case I honestly think that this edition is bombing hard. Just noticed as well that Wayland is now offering 35% off which is telling (but a good deal if you like the minis)
Agree – in Canada, the online shop I use mostly will sell out in about 10-15 minutes on a “hot release”. This … was not one of them. Everything except the French edition is very much available.
If GW is going to treat HH like 40K with a 3 year edition cycle change, then it is not going to do well. The grass roots of HH are Grognards who love to build and convert their armies. They tend to be people with disposable income but little time to play – so they build their armies slowly and get in a game now and then. They are certainly not wholesale competitive scene players. IF GW thinks that they are going to buy a new game with units that are not in the official rules, but only in legacy documents after spending hundreds of dollars/euros/pounds on their products…then I think they are gravely mistaken.
My gaming group was somewhat happy with 2nd edition. They do not really like 3rd edition. They are actually waiting for the free Circle Edition by the Outer Circle. If it is any good I am thinking of joining them, because I can’t get them to play HH with Epic Armageddon rules.
I was a bit stunned with a “new edition” of HH as well. GW shit the bed with this idea – completely, thoroughly. Add supplements and campaigns – don’t 3 year cycle it. Fuck GW for doing that.
