Community Spotlight: BIG X-Wing Games, Classic Empire & Napoleonic Armies
July 23, 2025 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Mega X-Wing Game by seldon9
We start off with seldon9, who recently put together a rather large player game of X-Wing, inspired by the work of Lloyd and Killian when it came to battling it out on Endor back in the day. As well as your classic X-Wing miniatures being used, seldon9 also worked on producing some iconic terrain that fits the forest moon of Endor as well as some standout miniatures!
This yearly meet-up with friends takes place in a bunkhouse which has two large tables, perfect for board games and wargames. The participation game for this year was Endor and whilst there was a bit of a flirtation with doing a Death Star trench run, going back to Endor seemed like an awesome idea, especially when inspired by the work we've done before for Star Wars Day and such.
seldon9 has put together not only a breakdown of how the terrain and vehicles came together but also how planning and plotting out the game worked out as well. The actual game ended up taking about five hours but it was also subject to heat breaks thanks to the sweltering heat that we've been having here recently. At least with loads of players, you don't have to do as much work moving stuff around!
I really like the way that the gaming table came together in the end. I think the forest being just set on flat pieces works well and means that you've got space to see what's happening across the large expanse of the table. Having the iconic defence lasers and such does sell the spectacle of the occasion, however, especially when you factor in the walkers for the Empire.
If you want to find out how it all shook out and how this all became a possibility, then you can dive into the project above. X-Wing is very much not dead, and there are still people having fun with it.
Classic Empire by marcuslamb
The Empire Strikes Back! Not quite linked but equally quite fittingly following on from the Star Wars project above, marcuslamb has dug out some old Empire miniatures and is thinking about doing their own "spring clean" challenge to bring these back to life. This golden button is here to prompt you to actually get it done as I'd love to see how these change from their old schemes.
These miniatures are not going to be going on eBay and so the idea is that marcuslamb is tempted to not just Dettol everything and instead do some touch-ups and tweaks. As they say, the paint jobs aren't that bad considering this was from thirty years ago!
Anything utterly awful will be getting stripped and whilst they might not ever get another game, it will be nice to see these miniatures given a new swanky paint job. The idea is that the miniatures might also be rebased to be multi-based so they could be used for something that fits that style of game mechanics. We shall have to wait and see.
Last but not least, marcuslamb wanted some help. They wanted you to tell them what YOU would do with this treasure trove of miniatures. Would you strip it all or would you go for touching up the paint jobs?
Napoleonic Wargaming by scribbs
Last but not least, scribbs has been working on this Napoleonic wargaming project for a while and so even if this particular project dives back in time a bit, I wanted to showcase some of the brilliant work they have been doing on their 15mm/18mm armies.
I still absolutely love the painting on these miniatures and I think going down to 15mm or 18mm feels like a good scale. You can still do the painting of the uniforms but you don't have to worry about all of the fiddly bits and instead go for a bit of a vibe. This is a very slow-burn project that has been growing and developing over the last few years and it's inspiring.
AB Figures have been the source of many of these particular miniatures that have popped up as part of the project. They do a sterling range, as we've seen in the past when we've looked at them as part of Indie of the Week. Big French guns and British guns have been the focus of the last few updates. You need cannons if you're going to be doing some big Napoleonic wargames.
Glorious miniatures and wonderful paint schemes. What's nice is that this is also a neat exploration of the period where scribbs actually explains what the miniatures are doing in his armies and how they slot into the larger project. Also, that basing is awesome!
