Early War Returns To Battlefront Miniatures’ Flames Of War
November 10, 2025 by brennon
Battlefront Miniatures has announced that they are going to be returning to Early War for Flames Of War with a brand new, updated Blitzkrieg book alongside new Starter Sets and Starter Forces to get you going with Early War World War II in 15mm.
Blitzkrieg // Flames of War
This all starts with the new Blitzkrieg book, which will cover the German, French and British forces fighting during this Early War period. You'll find in-depth historical information about the various units to help inspire your armies, alongside numerous painting and basing guides.
This marks a long-awaited return to the Early War period, which hasn't been actively supported for eight and a half years. This should give you a good excuse to zone in on 1940 and the Invasion of France with some new army projects.
New Early War Starter Sets
To aid in getting into the Early War period, there are two Starter Sets that will be available next year. The first is Maginot Line.
Maginot Line Starter Set // Flames of War
This is a German versus French set, which gives you two forces to get playing with.
- German Force (4x Panzer III Tanks, 3x Panzer II Tanks, 2x 3.7cm Gun Teams)
- French Force (5x Somua S-35 Tanks, 3x Hotchkiss H-39 Tanks, 1x Motor Fusiliers Platoon)
You will also get your complete A4 Rulebook and a Quickstart guide, plus all of your relevant Unit Cards and the dice for playing your first games. If you want to go that little step further into the Early War period, then there's also the Dunkirk set.
Dunkirk Starter Set // Flames of War
This set features the Germans going up against the British with two full armies.
- German Force (1x Motorised Rifle Company HQ, 2x Motorised Rifle Platoons, 2x StuG Assault-guns)
- British Force (5x A13 Tanks, 3x Light Mk VIC Tanks, 2x 2pdr Gun Teams, 1x Rifle Platoon)
As with the Maginot Line set, you'll also get your Rulebook, Quickstart Guide, Cards and Dice. Two fairly good sets that should have you playing out a few of those opening engagements between the Allies and the Axis.
New Starter Forces & More
As well as the new Starter Sets, you'll also be able to pick up new Starter Forces in the wake of the initial release.
Early War Starter Forces // Flames of War
These Starter Forces will cover the Germans, British and French with the German Light Tank Company, British Rifle Company and the French Combat Company. The French tend to routinely get left out of World War II in larger wargames and so having the chance to play them properly in the Early War seems like a great chance to try something different.
More will follow in the Spring of 2026 with more troops, dice, tokens, objectives, blister packs, boxes and more that will help you expand your armies. Summer 2026 will also see a new supplement, which Battlefront has classified as Barbarossa, so keep an eye out for that!

Tiny tanks go Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Are they cold?
🙄😆
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
The french fought in World War 2? I thought france was just a motorway service station for the germans on the way to the coast!
For those without a sense of humour… this is called a joke.
No Polish? That’s a big disappointment.
Definitely a big miss. “Early War” but not that early…
It’s a pass from me.
I think they wanted to polish this release first … 😉
Its the initial early war release, they have to make what will sell and can only release so much at one, I suspect we’ll see the Poles as a follow on release later in 2026.
Been really looking forward to this for a long time, its fantastic that this long running project to redo early war right and in plastic has finally got there.
In usual flames of war style the starter and army sets look fantastic value and have a very nice mix of miniatures in them, nice to see the BEF, Germans and French all get the plastic treatment, I’m sure the Poles will be a follow in release and maybe some of the smaller nations like Belgium and the Danes will get something?
Been awaiting this – want the plastic infantry/tanks for my long planned “Gear Krieg” project.
